Previously thought to be identical to the red-belted conk, DNA analysis shows it is in fact a distinct species. This species is named after Herman von Schrenk, a respected name in forest pathology. Fomitopsis pinicola, is a stem decay fungus common on softwood and hardwood trees. Its conk (fruit body) is known as the red-belted conk. The species is common throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere.
